Best SPF Lip Balm: 7 Lip Balms With SPF 30+ (Your Lips Age and Burn Too)

The best lip balm with SPF is one with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher that you’ll actually reapply: every two hours outdoors and after eating or drinking. For sensitive lips, choose a mineral (zinc oxide) formula like EltaMD UV Lip Balm or Vanicream Lip Protectant. For an easy everyday balm, Aquaphor Lip Protectant + Sunscreen SPF 30 or Supergoop! PLAY Lip Balm work well. If you want a little color, a tinted SPF balm replaces lipstick and sunscreen in one step.

Below: why lips need sunscreen (especially after 35), how to choose, our picks by need, and the ingredients that can make lips worse.

The Real Problem

Lips have very little melanin, a thin outer layer and no oil glands, so they burn easily and dry out fast, and most of us never put sunscreen on them. Years of sun can lead to thinner, paler lips, a blurry lip line, vertical lines and rough, scaly patches. The lower lip, which catches more sun, is also a common spot for skin cancer. A regular lip balm moisturizes, but it doesn’t protect.

Why Lips Need SPF After 35

  • They burn easily. Lips have little melanin and a thin protective layer.
  • Sun ages them. UV breaks down collagen, so lips lose fullness and definition, and lines form around them.
  • They dry out. No oil glands means they rely on what you put on them.
  • Skin cancer risk. The lower lip gets the most sun, and skin cancers can develop there. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher.

Lip sunscreen is the lip version of daily face SPF: prevention is much easier than repair. See our sunscreen guide for women over 40 for the face.

Ingredients That Can Irritate Lips

If your lips stay dry, peel or burn no matter what you use, the balm may be the problem. Common culprits:

  • Fragrance and flavorings (including cinnamon and some fruit flavors).
  • Menthol, camphor and peppermint, which feel cooling but can irritate.
  • Some chemical sunscreen filters in people who are sensitive to them. Try a zinc oxide balm instead.
  • Lanolin in people with a wool or lanolin allergy.

Switch to a plain, fragrance-free mineral balm for two weeks and see if things calm down.

Lip Changes to Get Checked

See a dermatologist if you notice a rough, scaly patch that doesn’t heal, a sore that bleeds or comes back, a white or discolored area, a blurring of the line between the lip and skin, or a lump. Persistent scaly patches on the lower lip can be a sign of sun damage (actinic cheilitis) that’s worth treating early.

Lip Sun Protection Checklist

  • Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher
  • Mineral formula if lips are sensitive
  • One balm in every bag, car and coat
  • Reapply every 2 hours outdoors
  • Reapply after eating and drinking
  • Rich lip mask at night
  • Skip mint, flavor and fragrance if lips are irritated
  • Get non-healing patches checked

Frequently Asked Questions

Do lips really need sunscreen?

Yes. Lips burn easily, sun exposure ages them, and the lower lip is a common site for skin cancer. Use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher whenever you’re outdoors.

What SPF should a lip balm have?

SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum. Many lip balms are only SPF 15, which offers less protection.

How often should I reapply SPF lip balm?

About every two hours when you’re outdoors, and every time you eat, drink or wipe your mouth.

Is mineral or chemical SPF lip balm better?

Both work. Mineral (zinc oxide) formulas are often better tolerated by sensitive lips; chemical formulas tend to look clearer.

Can SPF lip balm prevent lip lines?

It helps prevent sun-related collagen loss, which contributes to lip lines and thinning. It won’t erase existing lines, but daily protection slows new damage.
