AmLactin is the stronger smoother: its main active is 12% lactic acid (as ammonium lactate), which is especially good for rough, dry, scaly and crepey skin. CeraVe SA is the gentler, more “complete” formula: salicylic acid plus lactic acid and urea for exfoliation, with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide for the barrier, which makes it a favorite for bumpy keratosis pilaris and sensitive skin. If your skin is mainly rough and dry, pick AmLactin. If it’s bumpy or easily irritated, pick CeraVe SA.

The Real Problem

Rough body skin is usually a build-up problem: dead cells stick together, skin looks dull and feels like sandpaper, and plain lotion just sits on top. Both of these lotions dissolve the build-up chemically, which is gentler than scrubbing. But they work differently, and the wrong one for your skin either won’t do much or will sting.

AmLactin vs CeraVe SA comparison

Short Answer

Choose AmLactin for very dry, rough, ashy or crepey skin on legs and arms. Choose CeraVe SA for keratosis pilaris bumps, strawberry legs, or skin that stings easily. Use both by alternating: CeraVe SA on the bumpy areas and AmLactin on the rough, dry areas, never layered on the same patch the same day.

What’s in Each

AmLactin

AmLactin’s daily lotion is built around ammonium lactate, a form of lactic acid at 12%, in a simple moisturizing base of glycerin, mineral oil and dimethicone. Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that loosens dead skin cells and also helps skin hold water, so it smooths and moisturizes at the same time. It’s a well-studied, dermatologist-familiar ingredient for dry, scaly skin. The trade-off: it can tingle, especially at first, and it makes skin more sun-sensitive.

CeraVe SA

CeraVe’s SA formula uses salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid that’s oil-soluble and works well on bumpy, clogged follicles (the bumps of keratosis pilaris). It adds lactic acid and urea for extra smoothing, and three ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to support and calm the barrier. CeraVe positions it as suitable for keratosis pilaris and recommends it for the body, not the face.

How to Use Each

AmLactin

  1. Apply to clean, dry skin once or twice a day (start once a day).
  2. Skip freshly shaved areas and any cracks; it will sting.
  3. Wear sunscreen on exposed areas, since AHAs increase sun sensitivity.
  4. Expect smoother skin in 1–2 weeks and more even texture in 3–4.

CeraVe SA

  1. Apply after showering, once or twice a day.
  2. It’s gentle enough for most people to use daily from the start.
  3. Give KP bumps 4–6 weeks; they improve gradually and come back if you stop.
  4. Use a facial moisturizer for your face, not the SA body formula.

Can You Use Both?

Yes, but don’t layer them on the same skin at the same time. Two exfoliating acids together can irritate. Options:

  • Split by area: CeraVe SA on the backs of the arms (KP), AmLactin on the shins (dry and rough).
  • Alternate days: AmLactin one night, CeraVe SA the next.
  • Use a plain moisturizer on any day your skin feels sensitive.

Don’t combine either with a body retinol on the same night; alternate instead. Retinoids aren’t recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

AmLactin or CeraVe SA? Checklist

  • Rough, dry, ashy or crepey → AmLactin
  • Bumpy KP or strawberry legs → CeraVe SA
  • Sensitive skin → CeraVe SA
  • Avoid AmLactin on shaved or cracked skin
  • Avoid CeraVe SA with aspirin allergy
  • Sunscreen on exposed areas
  • Never layer both on the same patch
  • Give it 3–6 weeks

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AmLactin or CeraVe SA better for keratosis pilaris?

CeraVe SA is usually the better first choice for KP because salicylic acid targets the clogged follicles that cause the bumps. AmLactin can also help, especially if the skin is very dry and rough.

Which is stronger, AmLactin or CeraVe SA?

AmLactin generally feels stronger because of its 12% lactic acid, and it’s more likely to tingle. CeraVe SA is gentler and adds barrier-repair ingredients.

Can I use AmLactin or CeraVe SA on my face?

Both are body products. Use facial products with lactic or salicylic acid made for the face instead.

Why does AmLactin sting?

Lactic acid can sting on dry, cracked, freshly shaved or sensitive skin. It usually eases after the first week. If it keeps stinging, switch to CeraVe SA or use AmLactin every other day.

How long until I see results?

Most people feel smoother skin within one to two weeks. Bumps from keratosis pilaris take longer, often four to six weeks, and return if you stop.
